Abstract

ChatGPT has emerged as a productive artificial intelligence tool that has achieved significant success in performing tasks once carried out only by humans. It can solve both routine and complex problems with relative ease. As a result, some educators have recognized the potential of this tool and emphasized its benefits in language education and content comprehension.
This article examines the thoughts and attitudes of Literature, Translation, and Pedagogy students at the Faculty of Philology of an international state university in Kazakhstan regarding the use of ChatGPT to improve their mastery of content and English language skills. The article analyzes student opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of using artificial intelligence for educational purposes. Data for the study was collected from 138 students studying at the university in Kazakhstan. The findings show that students use ChatGPT, the most widely used AI model, primarily as a practical resource to aid learning and content mastery, in a relaxed and unstructured manner. The study also raises concerns about information accuracy, ethical issues, and a lack of control.
In this context, policymakers, researchers, and educators should develop common policies and strategies to ensure the responsible use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in foreign-language and content learning. This collaboration will help unlock the potential of AI tools as important resources for today's students and address concerns such as ethical issues and a lack of trust.
