Abstract

This article  comprehensively examines  the  distinctive features of the  formation  of  religious  identity  in  Central  Asian  countries  and its role in contemporary regional integration. It also analyzes the scholarly works of foreign and local researchers who have studied religious processes in Central Asia. The study explores the impact of Soviet-era atheistic policies on public consciousness and religious life, as well as the processes of religious revival during the years of independence. It reveals the relationship between traditional Islam and local culture, historical experience, and national characteristics. The article also considers the activities of the muftiates in Central Asian states, the current level of their interaction and cooperation, and issues related to institutional integration. The primary research method involved expert interviews with foreign and local scholars, experts conducting research in the countries of the region, and representatives of the muftiates. The findings demonstrate considerable differences in the religious policies implemented by governments and muftiates. These differences negatively affect cooperation among religious institutions and diminish the role of religion in regional integration. Although shared religious values can promote the spiritual rapprochement of regional communities, their effective use requires coordinated policies and sustainable institutional dialogue.
