Effectiveness of Using an Electronic Text ook in the Formation of Students‟ Competence in High School Chemistry

The effective use of electronic textbooks in teaching chemistry helps develop students' creative skills and increases their interest in the subject. The primary objectives of the chemistry curriculum in the natural sciences direction are to develop and refine students' critical thinking and communication skills. The conducted research aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of using electronic textbooks in teaching chemistry, particularly in introducing new concepts and formulas that are complex and challenging. In our research, special attention is given to the development of an electronic textbook system that includes didactic tasks aimed at enhancing the cognitive activity of students, taking into account their age, pedagogical, and psychological characteristics.
The research was conducted among eighth-grade students of classes ―A‖ and ―B‖ of ―Abay School,‖ and a survey was carried out. The results of the survey conducted among students showed that the use of innovative methods in the electronic textbook increases the effectiveness of lessons. The 8―B‖ class, which had low academic performance, was selected as the experimental group. In the chemistry lessons of class 8―B,‖ a virtual laboratory, animations, video recordings, and audio recordings were used together with the electronic textbook. As a result of using the new interactive electronic textbook, the academic performance of students reached 86 percent. The academic performance of students in the experimental class increased by 12 percent. After each lesson, test tasks and surveys were given to the eighth-grade students. According to the survey results, 92 percent of the students had a positive attitude toward the lessons using the electronic textbook. Lessons using the electronic textbook were conducted at the school, and a systematic analysis of the completed lessons was carried out.
