Meaning of Verbs Expressing Intellectual Activity

The article examines verbs that encode human intellect as manifested through consciousness, thought, and speech. Intellectual activity in language resides in everyday lexicon; the linguistic representation of a self-aware cognitive system is expressed particularly through analogy or association, comparison, and descriptive profiling, which together articulate an ethnos‘s distinctive worldview and guide inquiry into the complex nature of consciousness.
The study advances the hypothesis that the lexeme саң may share a common base with сана (―memory; mind‖) and the root сан ‗to reflect/ponder‘, and further argues that in саңлақ the root саң is associated with traits of human intelligence. Recognizing that ақыл is a borrowing, the article shows that lexical items describing deliberate, knowledge-seeking activity are well attested in Turkic sources and substantiate a distinct semantic group of verbs that highlights an important dimension of intellect.
The aim is to describe the Kazakh system of verbs of intellectual activity, specifying their etymological (root) linkages (саң/сан/сана), semantic field, and cognitive-pragmatic functions.
The work‘s significance lies in presenting a concise model, within a historical-etymological and cognitive framework, of the linguistic representation of mind, consciousness, and cognition in the Kazakh worldview, while proposing a typology of the relevant verbs.
Practically, the findings support the design of competency-based university modules, tasks, and texts for profession-oriented instruction in Kazakh, strengthening learners‘ linguistic, intellectual-worldview, and communicative-pragmatic competences, as well as critical-thinking skills.
The dataset comes from text corpora, historical dictionaries, and etymological sources; the methods employed include semantic-field grouping, componential analysis, and conceptual modeling.
Results comprise an up-to-date microsystem of verbs of intellectual activity, a detailed description of their cultural-symbolic layers and usage patterns, and terminology/handbook tables adapted for teaching. This resource can be integrated into school and university curricula to clarify language-competence criteria and foster interdisciplinary integration.
