The Role of Agioanthroponyms in Shaping Ethnic and Cultural Identity

This study examines the role of agioanthroponyms in shaping ethnic culture and identity, and their use among modern Turkic peoples. The impact of agioanthroponyms on ethnic consciousness and cultural memory is particularly noteworthy. Agioanthroponyms, which serve as the primary source of reflecting Turks‘ lifestyles, traditions, worldviews, knowledge, aesthetic preferences, consciousness, emotions, thoughts, values, and beliefs, facilitate the transmission of culture and values. Throughout history, agioanthroponyms have not only been an element of personal identity but have also played an important role in the transmission of social and spiritual values. Many of the customs and traditions in modern societies have deep historical roots. The tradition of naming among the Turkic peoples was formed as a result of the intersection of mentality and knowledge, characteristic of nomadic existence, Islamic influence, and Turkic culture. For this reason, agioanthroponyms have become the subject of this cognitive study in the context of language, religion, and culture. Agioanthroponyms are considered both an element that shapes social beliefs and a value that protects ethnic identity in a social and spiritual context. Therefore, the contribution of agioanthroponyms to the formation of ethnic consciousness and cultural memory within the Turkic-Islamic framework, as well as the function of these names as a religious and cultural bridge, is revealed. The article aims to examine the role of agioanthroponyms in the preservation of cultural heritage and the development of global cultural relations. While reviewing the naming traditions of the pre-Islamic Turks, the process by which agioanthroponyms became widespread with the acceptance of Islam is also discussed in detail. The meaning and use of agioanthroponyms in modern Turkic peoples are analyzed in the light of sociological research and surveys. The usage rates of agioanthroponyms are investigated by asking questions designed in accordance with the purpose of the study. It is emphasized that agioanthroponyms are not only a reflection of religious commitments in the Turkic-Islamic worldview but also an important element in social solidarity and the preservation of cultural heritage.
